The third annual Stanwick Lakes Ukulele Festival took place on Saturday 23 June 2018, hosted by Raunds Ukulele Orchestra and supported by Ukulele With Chris and Freyja Elise Designs.
Each year the festival has grown and this year was no exception. The day kicked off with a group of brand new ukulele players who were super keen and enthusiastic about learning to play this fantastic instrument. In sessions taught by Chris Gammon (of Ukulele With Chris) lasting just two hours, they went from no playing experience to being able to play a mix of exciting ukulele songs, ready to take part in the festival. They were all surprised at just how quickly they could learn and loved their new found skills.
New this year was the open mic stage which kicked off just after lunch. Raunds Ukulele Orchestra was delighted to be able to invite their friends from across East Northants, and beyond, to perform. The gathering crowd loved listening to the diverse range of music and styles played by each group. This is always the best way to learn from each other and we all had a list of new songs we wanted to learn to play.
The festival concluded with the much anticipated mass strum. Lead by Raunds Ukulele Orchestra, friends, groups and visitors joined together for two hours of massed playing. The sound of the players is always good and this didn’t disappoint. The diverse group of young and old, novice and experienced players jamming together put a smile on everyone’s face and left them with a bounce in their step.
Raunds Ukulele Orchestra is raising money (in collaboration with A Different Direction Choir) for a PA system which they can use to perform at a greater variety of events, including outdoor gigs. Proceeds from this event have gone towards that and helped the groups get closer to their final target.
