Dog Walking Field
A secure off-lead dog field at Stanwick Lakes – a private space for exercise, training, recall practice and nervous or reactive dogs, without impacting the wider nature reserve and its wildlife.
COMING SOON!
At Stanwick Lakes, we know that some dogs like space to run, sniff, explore and play safely off lead – while our nature reserve also needs protecting for the wildlife that calls it home.
That’s why we are creating a secure dog walking field: a private, enclosed space where dogs can enjoy the freedom to exercise off lead in a safe and relaxed environment, away from traffic, livestock and distractions. Whether your dog is nervous, reactive, in training, recovering recall confidence, or simply loves having room to run, the field will offer exclusive-use sessions so you can enjoy your walk in peace.
A safe, secure space:
Unlike much of the wider Stanwick Lakes site – where dogs are required to stay on leads in sensitive conservation areas to help protect ground-nesting birds, habitats and other wildlife – the dog field gives owners a dedicated area designed specifically for off-lead exercise and enrichment.

Wider Dog Rules at Stanwick Lakes Nature Reserve and Heritage Site:
Can I let my dog off lead in quieter areas?
No. All dogs must remain on leads at all times within the nature reserve, regardless of time of day, how quiet it seems, or your dog’s behaviour. This is essential to protect ground-nesting birds, over-wintering waterfowl, and other sensitive wildlife.
What happens if my dog chases wildlife or livestock?
Dog owners can face prosecution if their dog chases or injures wildlife or livestock. Rangers patrol the site regularly and may ask to see proof of your dog’s identification and your contact details. In serious cases, this information may be passed to enforcement authorities.
Are there any areas where dogs aren't allowed?
Dogs are welcome on all paths but must stay out of:
- Children’s play areas
- Water and wetland areas
- Restricted conservation zones (clearly marked)
What should I do if I see other dogs off lead?
Please politely remind other dog owners of the on-lead policy if you feel comfortable doing so. If you witness concerning behaviour or rule-breaking, please report it to a ranger on-site or use our incident reporting form.
Where can I walk my dog off lead?
Our only designated area for off-lead walks is to the north of the site, in a clearly marked areas, approximately 1 mile along the old railway line from the visitor centre. This area is less sensitive to wildlife and less busy with young children. Dogs are still xpcted to be under close control.
